In the vast landscape of Pakistan's energy sector, maintaining a steady flow of natural gas is a monumental task. As gas fields mature, natural pressure declines, posing a direct challenge to the nation's energy supply. In 2014, ENI Pakistan Ltd., a key player in the industry, faced this very challenge at the Bhit Gas Field in Sindh. The solution? An ambitious, high-stakes project that would become a benchmark for engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) in the country.
This wasn't just another upgrade. It was a race against time—a 210-day sprint to design, build, and commission a massive 20,000-horsepower (HP) gas compression facility. This is the story of the Bhit Wellhead Booster Compressor Project: a case study in precision, power, and flawless project execution.
The Bhit Gas Field, located in the Kirthar Concession, is a critical component of Pakistan's upstream energy infrastructure. To counteract the natural decline in reservoir pressure and achieve critical production optimization, a powerful intervention was needed. The objective was clear: install a series of wellhead booster compressors to give the natural gas the "push" it needed, ensuring it could be efficiently extracted and processed.
But the task was immensely complex. It required a seamless integration of multiple engineering disciplines—Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, and Civil—all working in harmony under an aggressive deadline to deliver a complete turnkey solution.
At the core of the project was the installation of ten massive natural gas compressors, collectively delivering a staggering 20,000 HP. This was the new "heartbeat" for the Bhit field. The scope of this equipment installation was immense:
Precision Installation: The colossal gas compressor skids were expertly lifted, positioned, and grouted onto their specially engineered foundations, ensuring long-term stability for decades of high-vibration operation.
Complex Interconnections: A complex network of process piping was fabricated and welded to manage the gas flow, while intricate electrical and instrumentation lines were laid for seamless control systems integration, serving as the facility's central nervous system.
Critical Support Systems: To ensure smooth and safe operations, a Slug Catcher (a type of pressure vessel) was installed to separate liquids from the gas stream, alongside a Blow Case (an emergency pressure relief system) for safety during emergency scenarios.
What made the Bhit project a resounding success was ENI Pakistan’s mastery of integrated project delivery. Success depended not on individual teams, but on their seamless collaboration.
Civil Works: The Unshakeable Foundation Before any machinery could be installed, the team built a robust civil infrastructure. This included rock-solid foundations designed for heavy machinery and a network of pipe supports to secure the extensive pipeline system.
Mechanical Works: The Steel Backbone Teams of skilled specialists executed the piping fabrication and welding, along with structural steel assembly, meticulously constructing the physical framework of the entire facility.
Electrical Works: Powering the Operation A dedicated team handled all aspects of industrial electrical works, from earthing and cable laying to complex panel terminations and rigorous loop testing to energize the system safely.
Instrumentation Works: The Brains of the System The project's "brain" came from the instrumentation team, who installed field instruments and control panels. Their exhaustive loop testing and verifications ensured every sensor and valve communicated flawlessly with the central control system.
From the pre-commissioning checks to the final commissioning, start-up, and performance testing, the entire project was completed within the tight 210-day timeframe—a testament to ENI Pakistan's world-class project management and engineering expertise.
The successful start-up of the Bhit Wellhead Booster Compressors significantly enhanced the gas production capacity of the field. More than just an engineering feat, this project made a direct and valuable contribution to Pakistan's energy security, solidifying ENI Pakistan’s reputation as a leader in delivering complex oil and gas projects that power the nation's future.
